FAQ
Q: HOW FAR IN ADVANCE DO I NEED TO MAKE MY TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS?
A: Time of year, destination, and number of horses you have to ship are all factors in the time frame you need to make shipping arrangements. Generally, the more lead time you provide us (at least 30 days is best), the better we are able to accommodate specific shipping date requests. 14-21 days is ample time in most cases, unless you have an unusual shipping destination. Our travel experts make great efforts to schedule horses going to the same area of destination to reduce travel time.
Q: WHAT IS REQUIRED TO GUARANTEE MY TRANSPORT?:
A: 50% deposit required along with signed contract
Q: DO YOU SHIP TO CANADA?
A: No, at this time we do not ship to Canada. However, we may offer this in the future.
Q: ARE THERE ANY SHIPPING RESTRICTIONS BETWEEN STATES THAT I SHOULD KNOW ABOUT?
A: Use this link for current shipping restrictions and/or new regulations.
USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service
Q: WHAT ARE GILFRY’S AREAS OF TRAVEL?
A: The 48 continental states in the US.
Q: HOW DO I KNOW WHEN MY HORSE IS BEING SHIPPED TO MY FARM?
A: The Gilfry office sets up shipping with the originating farm. Prior to shipping we will be in contact with you to confirm exact pickup date with an approximate time (within a 3 hour window). Once pickup has been completed you will be advised, and then notified of estimated time of arrival.
Q: IF WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE HOME, WILL GILFRY DRIVERS PICKUP OR DROP OFF HORSES FROM/AT OUR FARM?
A: Yes, we can pickup or drop off horses without farm personnel, however we prefer to have owner representation present for safety purposes.
Q: DO GILFRY DRIVERS FEED AND WATER HORSES DURING TRAVEL?
A: Yes, we keep food and water in front of the horse at all times.
Q: WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT BANDAGING?
A: It is each owner’s preference. However, many horses are not used to bandages (i.e. young horses). Often on long trips, bandages will slip causing more problems than they would protect. If bandages slip, we will remove them. It is also important to know that we will not bandage or re-set bandages on trips.
Q: WHAT ARE SOME TIPS TO PREPARE MY HORSE FOR THE MOST COMFORTABLE SHIPPING?
A: * Send your own hay. Your horse is used to it.
* If your horse requires electrolytes, be sure you have an adequate supply to provide the driver for the transport.
* Be sure the driver is aware of any special needs for your horse.
* For cold weather transports, providing your own blankets would be beneficial for your horse’s comfort.
Q: WHAT HAPPENS IN THE EVENT THAT MY HORSE CAUSES DAMAGE TO GILFRY EQUIPMENT DURING TRANSPORT?
A: Each situation is different and no two animals are the same. Our staff is trained to do their best to ensure that your horse remains safe during the transport. However if your horse is unruly and cannot be controlled during the loading or unloading process, we will evaluate the situation and you may be liable for damages.
Q: WHAT PAPERWORK IS NEEDED FOR TRAVEL?
A: Upon confirming shipping arrangements, our travel experts will advise you on the appropriate paperwork needed for your destination. Typically, your horse will need a current negative coggins test and a Health Certificate. Other requirements may be necessary depending on destination. Please consult your veterinarian for these documents.
Q: WHAT TYPE OF INSURANCE DO YOU HAVE FOR MY HORSE OR IS INSURANCE AVAILABLE?
A: We do not offer insurance through our company. If you would like travel insurance contact your insurance agent.
